What is Breast Implant Surgery?

Breast implant surgery, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that involves the insertion of artificial implants into the breasts to increase their size and enhance their shape. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, and typically takes one to two hours to complete.

There are two main types of breast implants: saline and silicone. Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution and are inserted empty into the breast, then filled once they are in place. Silicone implants are filled with a gel-like substance that feels and behaves similarly to natural breast tissue.

How is Breast Implant Surgery Performed?

The surgeon makes an incision, typically under the breast or in the armpit, to create a pocket for the implant. The implant is then inserted into the pocket and positioned, either behind the breast tissue or under the muscle. The incision is then closed with sutures, and the breast is bandaged.

After the surgery, patients typically experience some pain, swelling, and bruising, which can be managed with pain medication. The full results of the surgery are usually visible after several weeks or months, once the swelling has gone down and the implants have settled into their final position.
